where TFuelCell is the fuel cell temperature, TDesalination is the top brine temperature (TBT) of the desalination process, C is the lower specific heat capacity between the water and the air, and ṁ is the mass flow rate of the cooling air. These two temperatures and the mass flow rate of the cooling air are dictated by what type of fuel cell and what type of desalination unit are used (refer to Table 7.1 and Table 7.2). From Table 7.1, a 1 MW PAFC plant will provide 1.27 MW of thermal power (operating temperature between 80 and 200°C). Therefore, the mass flow rate can be calculated from Equation (7.2):
